Do you really want to buy a house?

Do you really want to buy a house?

Maybe you’re moving to another city, maybe you’ve outgrown your current house, maybe you’re renting and it’s time to bye or maybe your personal situation has changed, they’re all valid reasons to buy a house. Fine, this is the first step, making the decision to buy a house and starting the search process.

From this point you should make a sincere and in-depth reflection of the type of house you’re going to look for. The main conditioning factors in all searches are location, size and budget. We will also start to think about other important aspects such as the type of property, its condition, distribution, if we’re willing to renovate or not, the surroundings we’d like, non-essential elements like a terrace or a garage and how we will finance it. Great, we have the analysis, we start the search and we visit several houses. If none of them convince us and we start to lose heart we have to reflect on why.

Do I really want to buy a house? What mistakes am I making? Is the location-size-budget equation realistic? We might have to give something up or increase the budget.

We decide we like a house and it’s not available any more? We might need to be faster in making  our minds up and making an offer. Sometimes we think that if we’ve found a house we like then there’ll be others and we end up finding out that there aren’t, that that was the house of our dreams.

Did we make a reasonable offer and the owner rejected it? Maybe the offer wasn’t so reasonable and the owner had better offers. We have to be reasonable and understand just how far we can bargain.

Does the house have potential but we can’t see it? In many cases small reforms can adapt the house to our needs but we have to be able to see it and it has to be supported by professionals.  Sometimes it’s hard to get by the current state of a sellers personality infused house. Try to mentally empty it out. It’s a very helpful exercise.

Did they accept your offer but you can’t find a bank willing to finance it?  One of the important aspects to consider from the start are the resources we will have available.

To reinforce the search, to get more information on the house and to get a good price and to be advised during all the process it is a good idea to get the support of a professional.

If at any time of the process we analyse the reasons why we’re not finding our future house we can learn form our mistakes and resume our search with confidence.

And above all, when buying a house you need to have two things really clear: You must  be flexible and determined. That way you’ll be sure to find your dream house.

Good luck!
